How to Install and Fix the New 'ShareThis' WordPress Plugin

ShareThis recently updated their WordPress plugin to allow you to choose a bunch of great new styles and display options. However, I found out that it took a little trial and error to get it to play nicely and do what I wanted it to do.

IMPORTANT: It was my experience if you already have the ShareThis plugin installed and simply update it, your options won’t show up on your page. You need to first deactivate, then delete the plugin, then reinstall it.

Fixing the Weird Little Lines that Show up at the Bottom of the New ‘ShareThis’ Plugin in Horizontal mode

Once you have the new plugin up and running, one of the popular options seems to be “Horizontal Count”. The problem is that for some reason the default style associated with that choice gives off funky little lines under the two “share” buttons.

It’s not much but it was enough to bug me so here’s how I fixed it.

You’ll need to be able to edit your head tag and add some style code to that.

Add this code inside style tags somewhere before your /head tag:

.stButton_gradient{background-image:url('');background-repeat:repeat-x;border-left:1px solid #bfbfbf;border-right:1px solid #bfbfbf;border-bottom:1px solid #bfbfbf;padding-left:2px;padding-right:2px;padding-top:0px !important;padding-bottom:0px !important;line-height:16px;font-size:16px;font-family:serif;}

You can see the difference between the image and the actual buttons below. For some reason, the default padding the plugin puts on those buttons causes it to break just a little bit. What the code above does is simply remove the bottom and top padding.

If you try it, post your results in the comments so we can take a look.

Cee-Lo's "F**K YOU."

I’ve been working on a project for the past few days but keep seeing this mentioned. Just watched it and now I know why. And if you don’t know who Cee-Lo is you may know him from Gnarls Barkley, or if you’re really old school and you like hip-hop he’s from the Goodie Mob.

APOD: 2010 August 13 – Arp 286: Trio in Virgo

Explanation: A remarkable telescopic composition in yellow and blue, this scene features a trio of interacting galaxies almost 90 million light-years away, toward the constellation Virgo. On the left, two, spiky, foreground Milky Way stars echo the trio galaxy hues, a reminder that stars in our own galaxy are like those in the distant island universes. Predominately yellow, with sweeping spiral arms and dust lanes, NGC 5566 is enormous, about 150,000 light-years across. Just below it lies small, blue NGC 5569. Near center, the third galaxy, NGC 5560, is multicolored and apparently stretched and distorted by its interaction with NGC 5566. The galaxy trio is also included in Halton Arp’s 1966 Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies as Arp 286. Of course, such cosmic interactions are now appreciated as a common part of the evolution of galaxies.

I'm like the César Chávez of Blogging

I rarely drink soda but when I do I expect to be compensated for it. I mean I’m sort of a big deal on the internet being a famous blogger and all. Can I seriously be expected to give out prime real-estate on my site with some crazy free product placement deal?

Not long ago, as my most recent soda shakes began to take hold, I decided to do what any right-minded capitalistic American would do. I called up my agent and told him to get me some sort of big time blogger/soda endorsement deal before I came down to his office and told him stories about the Ancient Aztecs used to rip off the heads of their fallen enemy and shit in their skull before using the head itself, now filled with poop, in some ancient form of basketball.

Since I live in NYC and I’m a Yankees fan it seemed natural that we set our sights on PepsiCo. Besides, their worldwide headquarters is just north of the city in White Plains which meant, travel-wise, I could literally do as little as possible to try and seal this deal.

Once my agent got us the meeting we hopped on the Metro North to White Plains and got ready to do battle with these guys. I have to admit that there were a few points during the negotiations that got pretty ugly. There was a lot of name-calling and a lot of, “are you fucking serious, do you really think there’s any goddamned chance in hell that we would even consider giving you money just for sitting around drinking a Pepsi while you blag or blark or whatever the fuck you call it then you’re out of your god damned mind,” or something to that effect.

Project Helping the Internet One Question at a Time

I’m starting a new, ongoing service called Project It has a two-fold purpose. One, allow us to build a unique, one of a kind, helpful database of questions and answers that can potentially help other people with the same problems or issues and two it will afford people the opportunity to challenge themselves and, with the help of, have the confidence to create a better product on their own.

While is getting up and running, myself and my partner in crime at FlooID Interactive will be the ones handling most of the questions. Although as the project starts to gel and take shape we’re going to be working with experts and thought leaders, some of the sharpest minds in the industry to answer your questions and share their expertise.

How Does Project work

  1. will be starting out with a soft launch. It’s not a separate site. Currently will simply be integrated just as any other category on the site. As the project grows and evolves I’ll make the decision on what, if any, the next step will be.
  2. Spread the word! The more questions we add to the database the more relevant the database becomes. is truly a community driven site.
  3. Click here to go to my contact page. Fill out the required fields and select “Answer Bag” from the dropdown menu under “In regards to”
  4. Fill out your question while being as detailed and specific as possible. Make sure to include a link to the site/page you’re question is referring to.
  5. That’s it! Click send and wait. Once your question has been answered and posted you will be notified via email.
  6. Lastly, be sure to tell all your friends and family that usually come to you for tech questions and advice to check out and leave you alone.

Remember, there’s no such thing as a dumb question, feel free to ask whatever is on your mind. Design, layout, plugins, customizations or even something as simple as adding paragraph tags. Think of it as your chance for a one-on-one tutorial, a mini-masterclass on the one thing that’s been bugging you that you always wished you could change/fix about your site.

Project is sponsored by FLooID Interactive.
